As everyone began discussing the problem and how to safely deal with it my attention was brought back to Reana time and again as she went about her job. Her relief at being productive was evident, and her confidence in her abilities gave her a sexy appeal I couldn’t deny. Behind the bar or carrying a tray she was in her element, knew the ebb and flow of customers’ needs intuitively it seemed. A thought hit me, and I asked Talia why we were to only drink water or her tea.
“I can’t say for sure if the drinks here aren’t contaminated with her spell, so our best option is sealed water or my tea,” she explained.
“Well, Reana has worked here for a year and not been effected by their drinks,” I countered
“Wait, I don’t drink, not the alcohol here anyway. Bottled water is all I ever have. I don’t trust some of the bartenders here not to drug me, or double pour the liquor to get me drunk. I need all my senses in this job so I stay sober,” she replied, removing empty bottles and replacing them with new cold ones.
That made sense, and pride swelled inside at how smart my mate was. She may look the part of sexy yet not so smart waitress, but beneath that beautiful head of hair was a brain that didn’t miss a thing. “Talia, can you tell if the liquor behind the bar is spelled? If you could tell that Rea was clean by a touch, isn’t it the same thing?”
“Unfortunately no, the spell changes when it hits living tissue and bodies. What the other covens and I have deduced is it’s dormant until consumed. We think it’s cloaked in a way, so that any magic detection that may be used will pass right over it when in liquid or solid form, but that’s still just a theory. We need to get a sample of the food, cloaking spells cast on food are harder to do. Plus, here, where they have control over the food and who eats it their concern for detection is less.” Talia looked at Reana, and I could see the wheels turning in her head.
“No, whatever you are thinking, Talia, the answer is no. I won’t have you endanger Reana in any way.” Standing to emphasize my point.
“Who the hell do you think you are? I get to choose what is dangerous to me and what isn’t. I get to decide if I want to help. I have been in this hell of a pack for two years, and I get to choose if I do whatever it is she is going to ask me.” Reana’s face reddened with anger as she spoke. The color only highlighted the curve of her neck, and the dimple that had been hidden in her left cheek. I longed to caress both, my fingers clenching with restraint.
I ignored her, the need to protect my mate overpowering the sensible man who knew the next words out of my mouth would anger her even more.
